With all setup in place for "Production By-Products" and the Status set to 'Certified', it is possible to output By-Product Items using both the "Output Journal" and the "Production Journal" within Business Central, each of which provide the same result, but follow a different process flow.

It is possible to see the list of potential By-Products (and to update them if required) directly from the "Production Order" screen, in the same way you view/update Component and Routing information. Simply use the By-Products menu option from the Lines section of the Production Order, as shown here for reference.

The following "Production Order By-Products" have been specified against the above Released Production Order.

Production Journal

When using the Production Journal, from the "Released Production Order", the system automatically creates journal lines for the Routing and Components that are assigned to the Production Order Line.

With Manufacturing Plus, this feature has been extended to also create journal lines for the By-Products. When the Production Journal is opened from the "Released Production Order" screen, potential By-Products are highlighted by the By-Product attribute being set. As a user you can then simply confirm the Output Quantity of any By-Product alongside the intended production Item, before posting the journal in the normal manner.

In the example below, alongside the 450 entered for the intended production Item, 50 has also been confirmed for the 1st By-Product Item.

Output Journal

If you use the "Output Journal" screen for posting Output, then the process for By-Products is different to confirming the Output of the intended Item and must be confirmed manually, by following the steps stated below.

  1. Create the Output Journal and specify the Order No. of your "Released Production Order"
  2. Select the By-Product attribute
  3. Use the Item No. field to lookup the list (or enter the By-Product Item No. if known) of available By-Products
  4. Confirm the Output Quantity and then Post the journal

An example of the Output Journal screen is shown here for reference.

Following either of the above processes will result in "Item Ledger Entries" being created for the Inventory of the By-Product Items and these will be classified with an Entry Type (on the Item Ledger Entry) of Output.

Note: When the Production Order is Finished, the By-Product will be costed in the same manner as the intended Item, taking a share of the Production Order costs based on the Output Quantities.
