If you are setting up Doc Links for the first time – Jump straight to Setting up with Modern Authentication

You are using Legacy Authentication and Doc Links has stopped working. What are my options?

The most likely cause is an expired secret in the SharePoint Legacy app. You can refer to this document to create a new app or extend secret however it is advised to now migrate to modern auth.

What you need to know about Modern Authentication for SharePoint – Best Practices

When setting up Doc Links with SharePoint, consider the following:

When setting up Doc Links for the first time, you must create a new Document Library and not use the default library (‘Documents’).

We recommend that the SharePoint site used for Doc Links is set up as a standard ‘Team Site’ rather than using a ‘Document Centre’ site template.

If the site you are using is a ‘Team Site’, it must be set to ‘Public’. Doc Links will not work if the site is set to ‘Private’.

If the site is of the type ‘Document Centre’, then Doc Links users must have direct permissions to the Document Library. We recommend creating a SharePoint group, adding all Doc Links users to the group, and assigning the required permissions to that group.

The same applies if the site is a sub-site. All Doc Links users must have access to the Document Library unless the site is a top-level site.

The user configuring Doc Links in Business Central must have SUPER permissions and must also be the owner of the site in SharePoint.

The Document Library must be set to check in documents automatically by ensuring the setting “Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited?” is turned off in Versioning Settings.

If you are moving from legacy authentication to modern authentication (changing the File Storage setting from SharePoint (Legacy) to SharePoint), when configuring Doc Links in Business Central you must use the name that appears in the URL for the Document Library. For example, if you have used the default library, this would be Documents in a legacy configuration and Shared%20Documents in a modern authentication configuration.

I’m using Legacy Authentication but now want to switch to Modern Authentication. What are my next steps?
